Letter from the Director

BobAs many of you are aware, I spent three weeks in Brasilia with our former Field Manager, Angela Viehmayer, just before Christmas. I travelled down there to work with her to document the methodology we developed during the pilot for the cCLEAR Program we wrapped up last Autumn, as well as the pilot itself. This documentation is critical as we attempt to scale and replicate the program so we can impact the lives of many more communities in the region, and eventually around the world. Angela was the architect for much of the methodology and together we made good progress on writing. I’m very grateful to her because although she had to work at her current job during the days, she dedicated most of her evenings and weekends to CEN so we could finish a rough draft before I left. I hope to have a solid draft of the methodology, which we are calling PRATICAR, by early Spring. We need to complete it so we can demonstrate our unique and effective work to prospective partners and to obtain needed funding for expanding Phase 1 and for starting Phase 2. The second phase will help the participants from the pilot build upon the strong foundation they’ve developed, and to build sustainable micro-enterprises that increase their family’s income.

Although there will be a hiatus with our fieldwork until this summer, we still need your support so we can keep working on our critical task of documentating our PRATICAR methodology and the Pilot project. Although we run a very lean organization by not maintaining an office or paid staff, and really keep costs down (I used my own frequent flyer miles for airfare and stayed with Angela while in Brasilia), we still have a number of expenses to be able to continue operating. Nearly our entire funding  comes from individual supporters like you!

Over the next months our wonderful and dedicated volunteers will be organizing several events in the Seattle and Bellingham areas, which promise to be a lot of fun. Please look over this mini-update for details, and help support our important work by attending them. Please tell your friends and coworkers about them too by forwarding this update to them.

Thank you for your continuing support and encouragement.
