Community-based tourism: A form of ecotourism that emphasizes the development of communities and allows for residents to have substantial control over its development and management. Community-based tourism allows communities to cultivate a sustainable source of income while maintaining their way of life and preserving the environment. Learn more

Empowerment:  A process where individuals gain the skills and resources needed to achieve their goals and stand on their two feet over the long term. Learn more

Facilitators: The team of individuals who guide program participants along their journey to build and strengthen their skills, habits and develop mindsets that support self-reliance.

Information and communications technology: Information and communications technology (or ICT) is often used as an extended synonym for information technology (IT), but is a more specific term that stresses the integration of telecommunications (telephone lines and wireless signals), computer hardware, software as well as audiovisual systems, which enable users to access, store, transmit, and manipulate information. Please reference: Information and communications technology

Participants: Project participants are generally residents of the communities that have been selected by CEN and our local implementation partner. The CEN program works best with individuals who can show motivation and meet at least a basic level of subsistence, time available and literacy. We also look for individuals who demonstrate the interest and capacity to share what they learn through the program with others in the community, thus becoming change agents for their community.

Sustainable projects: When a participant is comfortable and confident with their project and can take over management of the project without a facilitator's input.

Skills: Internal abilities that move the participant closer to established goals.

Resources: Items or technologies available that will aid in reaching established goals.
